Best Things to Do in Malaysia in 2026: Kuala Lumpur, Borneo & Beyond
Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia's most underrated destinations, from Kuala Lumpur's skyline to Borneo wildlife, Penang street food and Langkawi island trips.
Why Malaysia in 2026 Is Worth Planning Properly
Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia's most underrated destinations - a country of extraordinary diversity, from the gleaming skyline of Kuala Lumpur to the ancient rainforests of Borneo, some of the best street food in the world, and a coastline that rivals Thailand's. Here's what to prioritise.
1. Petronas Twin Towers - Skybridge & Observation Deck
The Petronas Twin Towers dominated the Kuala Lumpur skyline from the moment they were completed in 1998, and they remain one of the most impressive structures in Asia. The Skybridge on floors 41-42 and the observation deck on floor 86 are the two ticketed experiences, both with remarkable views. Book in advance because tickets are released online and sell out daily. Walk-in tickets are rarely available. Duration: 1.5 hours. Tip: book the first slot of the day at 9am for the shortest queues and clearest views.
2. Batu Caves - Kuala Lumpur Day Trip
The Batu Caves are a series of cave temples built into a limestone hill 13km north of Kuala Lumpur. The 272 rainbow-coloured steps lead to the main Temple Cave, watched over by a 43-metre gold statue of Lord Murugan. It is one of Malaysia's most photographed landmarks and one of the most important Hindu shrines outside India. Duration: half day. How to get there: KTM Komuter train from KL Sentral in about 30 minutes. Best time: 7-9am before the crowds and heat arrive.
3. Borneo Wildlife Tour - Orangutans & Proboscis Monkeys
The rainforests of Malaysian Borneo, especially Sabah and Sarawak, are among the last places on earth where you can see wild orangutans, pygmy elephants, and proboscis monkeys in their natural habitat. A guided river cruise along the Kinabatangan River is the single best wildlife experience in Malaysia. Duration: 2-3 days, with overnight tours recommended. Best time: March-October for orangutan sightings and June-August for proboscis monkeys. Fly to Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan from Kuala Lumpur.
4. Penang Street Food Tour
Penang's George Town is the street food capital of Malaysia and arguably the best hawker food city in Southeast Asia. A guided evening food tour covers char kway teow, asam laksa, Penang hokkien mee, and the unmissable cendol dessert. Duration: 3 hours. Best time: evening from 6pm. Fly to Penang International Airport from Kuala Lumpur in about 1 hour.
5. Genting Highlands - Awana Skyway Cable Car
The Awana Skyway cable car ascends 2,821 metres above sea level to the Genting Highlands resort complex, a mountain entertainment destination 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur with theme parks, an indoor snow world, and panoramic views over the Titiwangsa Range. Duration: half day or full day. From: $44 per person. Tip: go on a weekday because weekends are significantly busier.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Malaysia?
Malaysia is a year-round destination. March to October is the driest period for the west coast, including Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. November to February brings the northeast monsoon, so the east coast, including the Perhentian Islands and Tioman, is best avoided. Borneo is best visited March to October.
