Best Things to Do in Lisbon in 2026: Trams, Fado & Day Trips
Lisbon is one of Europe's most beautiful and affordable capitals, with tiled hills, coastal day trips, extraordinary food and Fado music that stops you in your tracks.
Why Lisbon in 2026 Is a Perfect Europe City Break
Lisbon is one of Europe's most beautiful and most affordable capitals - seven hills covered in pastel-coloured buildings, a coastline 30 minutes from the city centre, extraordinary food, and a music tradition, Fado, that will stop you in your tracks. Here's what to do.
1. Sintra Day Trip - Palaces & Moorish Castle
Sintra is 40 minutes from Lisbon by train and one of the most otherworldly places in Europe - a UNESCO World Heritage Site of royal palaces, a Moorish castle, and exotic gardens built into a forest-covered mountain range. The colourful Pena Palace, perched above the clouds at 450 metres, is the most visited site in Portugal outside Lisbon. Duration: full day. How to get there: train from Rossio Station in Lisbon, around 40 minutes. Book in advance because Pena Palace timed-entry tickets sell out by 9am in summer. Tip: hire a tuk-tuk in Sintra town to reach the castle and palace because the walk is steep and long in the heat.
2. Tram 28 - Alfama & Graca
Tram 28 is Lisbon's most famous tram route - a vintage yellow rattler that climbs through the steep streets of Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, Graca, and Mouraria, passing Sao Jorge Castle and atmospheric viewpoints. It is both a form of transport and one of the best introductions to old Lisbon. Tip: board at Praca Martim Moniz, the start of the route, rather than midway. The tram fills completely at peak times. Best time: 7-8am or after 6pm for the shortest queues.
3. Fado Show with Dinner
Fado is Portugal's national music - a deeply emotional vocal tradition rooted in Lisbon's working-class Alfama neighbourhood, with lyrics about longing, fate, and the sea. A traditional Fado dinner in Alfama, usually 3 courses and 1.5 hours of live music, is one of the most genuinely moving cultural experiences available in any European capital. Duration: 3 hours. Book in advance because the best Fado houses are booked up 1-2 weeks ahead in peak season. Tip: smaller venues with 20-30 people are significantly more intimate than large tourist Fado restaurants.
4. Belem - Pasteis, Monastery & Tower
Belem is Lisbon's most historic neighbourhood, 6km west of the city centre, and home to Jeronimos Monastery, Torre de Belem, and the original Pasteis de Belem bakery, where the recipe for pastel de nata has been kept secret since 1837. Duration: half day. How to get there: Tram 15E from Praca do Comercio. Do not skip the queue at Pasteis de Belem; it moves fast, and you should order at least four.
5. Arrabida Natural Park - Beaches & Dolphin Watching
Arrabida Natural Park, 45 minutes south of Lisbon, has some of the clearest water and finest beaches in Europe - limestone cliffs dropping into turquoise sea with virtually no development. A guided boat tour from Setubal combines the Arrabida coastline with near-guaranteed dolphin sightings. Duration: half day for a boat tour or full day with beaches. Best season: May to September. How to get there: guided tour from Lisbon or hire a car.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Lisbon?
March to June and September to October are the sweet spot - warm, sunny, and manageable crowds. July and August are peak season, very hot above 35C and very crowded. November to February is mild, quiet, and excellent value.
