The Mughal emperors built their summer retreats in Kashmir, and the gardens they left behind - Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, both on the eastern shore of Dal Lake - are among the finest surviving examples of Mughal garden design anywhere in the world. Expect terraced lawns, fountains, chinar trees, and the Zabarwan mountains behind. Duration: 2 hours for both. Best time: early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewest visitors.
