Best Things to Do in Florence in 2026: Uffizi Gallery, Duomo & Day Trips

Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and one of the most art-dense cities on earth. Use this guide for Uffizi, the Duomo, David, Tuscany wine and Cinque Terre day trips.

Why Florence in 2026 Rewards Advance Booking

Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and one of the most art-dense cities on earth. In a single day you can see Botticelli's Birth of Venus, Michelangelo's David, and Brunelleschi's dome - all within walking distance of each other. Here's how to do it properly.

1. Uffizi Gallery - Book Well in Advance

The Uffizi holds one of the world's greatest collections of Renaissance art - Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, Caravaggio's Medusa, Leonardo da Vinci's Annunciation, and Michelangelo's Doni Tondo among them. It is also chronically overcrowded without a timed-entry ticket. Non-negotiable: pre-book your timed entry. Walk-in queues during peak season from June to August can exceed 3 hours. Duration: 2-3 hours minimum. Tip: book a guided tour, ideally max 8 people, if it is your first visit.

2. Duomo Dome Climb - Brunelleschi's Engineering Marvel

Filippo Brunelleschi's dome, built between 1420 and 1436 without scaffolding using a double-shell construction technique he invented himself, is still the largest brick dome ever built. Climbing the 463 steps between the two shells gives you a view of Vasari's frescoes from inside at close range, plus panoramic views of Florence from the top. Dome entry requires a separate timed ticket included with the Duomo complex pass. Duration: 1.5 hours including the climb. Tip: wear comfortable shoes and avoid bags wider than 30cm because the passage between the shells is narrow.

3. Accademia Gallery - Michelangelo's David

The Accademia Gallery exists primarily to house one object: Michelangelo's David, completed in 1504. The 5.17-metre marble statue is more physically imposing in person than any photograph suggests. The queue without a pre-booked ticket routinely reaches 2 hours. Book timed entry in advance. Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour. Tip: the gallery also contains Michelangelo's unfinished Prisoners series, four extraordinary sculptures worth 15 minutes before you leave.

4. Tuscany Wine Tour - Chianti Day Trip

The Chianti wine region begins 20 minutes south of Florence - rolling hills of olive groves and vineyards, medieval hilltop towns, and some of the best red wine in Italy. A guided day trip covers 2-3 estate visits with tastings, a traditional Tuscan lunch, and a stop in San Gimignano, the medieval Manhattan of Tuscany. Duration: full day. From: $85 per person. Best season: September and October for harvest season, the most atmospheric time to visit the vineyards.

5. Cinque Terre Day Trip from Florence

The five colourful fishing villages of Cinque Terre - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore - are two hours from Florence by train and among the most photographed spots in Italy. A guided day trip handles the trains, hiking trail logistics, and gives you the best photo spots and hidden swimming coves. Duration: full day. Season: April-October. Tip: Vernazza and Manarola are the most photogenic villages, so prioritise these if time is limited.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Florence?

April-June and September-October are the best months - warm, manageable crowds, and the Tuscan countryside at its most beautiful. Avoid July and August if possible because temperatures regularly exceed 38C and the city is at peak tourist density. November to March is quiet, cool, and excellent for museum visits without crowds.
