3 Days in London: The Perfect Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

A practical first-timer London itinerary covering royal history, the Thames, Borough Market, the British Museum, Churchill War Rooms and a West End evening.

How to Spend 3 Days in London

London is enormous. Three days forces you to choose - and the choices below prioritise what's genuinely unmissable over what's merely famous. This itinerary covers the best of the city without the rookie mistake of trying to do everything.

Day 1 - Royal London & the Thames

Morning: Tower of London. The Tower of London is 1,000 years of English history in one complex, and the Yeoman Warder tours, led by the Tower's ceremonial guards known as Beefeaters, are among the best free guided experiences in any city in the world. Pre-book your timed entry. Allow 2.5 hours. The Crown Jewels queue builds quickly, so go there first. Book Tower of London on Pin Plan Go at pinplango.com/destinations/london.

Day 1 Afternoon - Tower Bridge & Borough Market

Walk across Tower Bridge for the classic London skyline view, then follow the South Bank west to Borough Market - London's oldest and most famous food market. It runs Tuesday to Saturday and is best from Thursday to Saturday. Monmouth Coffee, Neal's Yard Dairy and the hot salt beef sandwich stall are essential stops.

Day 1 Evening - Thames River Cruise

A Thames cruise from Westminster to Greenwich at dusk covers the Houses of Parliament, Tate Modern, the Shard and Tower Bridge from the water - the best single-hour introduction to London's geography available. The Clipper service is cheaper and less touristy than the official sightseeing boats. Book Thames cruise on Pin Plan Go at pinplango.com/destinations/london.

Day 2 - Museums & Churchill

Morning: British Museum. Free entry, extraordinary collection - Rosetta Stone, Elgin Marbles, Egyptian mummies and Lewis Chessmen. Go Tuesday or Wednesday morning at 9am for the smallest crowds. Focus on Rooms 4 for Egypt, 40-41 for Greece and the Elgin Marbles, and Room 1 for the Enlightenment Gallery. Allow 2.5 hours.

Day 2 Afternoon - Churchill War Rooms

The underground bunker complex beneath Whitehall where Winston Churchill directed Britain's Second World War effort is one of the best museums in London and one of the most overlooked by first-time visitors. Pre-book timed entry. Allow 2 hours. Book Churchill War Rooms on Pin Plan Go at pinplango.com/destinations/london.

Day 2 Evening - Covent Garden & Seven Dials

Walk north to Covent Garden - London's most atmospheric covered market and piazza, with good street performers and restaurants in the Floral Hall. The Seven Dials area, including Neal's Yard and Shorts Gardens, has the best independent restaurant density in central London.

Day 3 - West End, Parks & Buckingham Palace

Morning: St. James's Park & Buckingham Palace. Walk through St. James's Park, the most beautiful of London's Royal Parks, to Buckingham Palace. The Changing of the Guard ceremony usually runs Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, but check the official schedule because it varies seasonally. Arrive 30 minutes early for a decent position.

Day 3 Afternoon - National Gallery

Trafalgar Square's National Gallery holds one of the greatest painting collections in the world - Van Eyck, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Turner, Monet, Van Gogh and Seurat. Entry is free. Focus on Room 30 for Velazquez's Rokeby Venus, Room 43 for Van Gogh's Sunflowers, and Room 34 for Turner's Fighting Temeraire. Allow 1.5-2 hours.

Day 3 Evening - West End Theatre Show

London's West End has more theatre per square mile than anywhere on earth. Hamilton, The Lion King, Les Miserables and Mamma Mia have all run for years. Book directly through the official theatre website to avoid reseller fees. For same-day tickets at up to 50% off, the TKTS booth at Leicester Square opens at 10am.

Practical Tips for 3 Days in London

Getting around: the London Underground, or Tube, goes everywhere. Use an Oyster card or contactless bank card because it is cheaper than buying individual tickets. Budget: London is expensive, but free major attractions such as the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern and National Portrait Gallery offset the cost. Eat at Borough Market and Covent Garden market stalls rather than sit-down restaurants for affordable, excellent food. Best time to visit: May-June and September for the best weather, or December for Christmas markets and atmosphere. Avoid bank holiday weekends for the major museums. Tipping: 10-12.5% in restaurants if service is not already included. Not expected at pubs or cafes.
